Ethernet Cable Differences and Pinout

Ethernet cables mainly differ by speed, shielding, and bandwidth capability. The higher the category, the faster and more reliable the connection, especially over longer distances.

Cat5e

  • Up to 1 Gbps
  • Good for basic home or small office use
  • Most common and affordable
  • Works up to 100 meters

Best for: general internet, cameras, basic networking

Cat6

  • Up to 10 Gbps (short distances ~55m)
  • Better internal twisting = less interference
  • Improved performance over Cat5e

Best for: faster networks, business use, gaming setups

Cat6a

  • Full 10 Gbps up to 100 meters
  • Thicker cable with better shielding
  • Handles interference much better than Cat6

Best for: professional installs, high-speed networks, long runs

Cat7 / Cat8 (specialized)

  • Very high shielding and bandwidth
  • Cat8 supports extremely high speeds but short distance (~30m)
  • More rigid and harder to install

Best for: data centers, specialized high-speed environments


Shielded vs Unshielded (important difference)

  • UTP (Unshielded): standard, flexible, cheaper
  • STP (Shielded): better against interference, used near power lines or RF noise
